Helm Crag is a fell in the English Lake District situated in the Central Fells to the north of Grasmere.Despite its low height it sits prominently at the end of a ridge, easily seen from the village. This, combined with the distinctive summit rocks which provide the alternative name 'The Lion and the Lamb', makes it one of the most recognised hills in the District.

Lion and Lamb, Grasmere. Helm Crag, or the Lion and Lamb, as it's known locally, is a fantastic family walk near Grasmere in the Lake District. It is classed as a Wainwright Fell, which means it's over 1000 feet. It's actually 1328 feet to be exact (or 405 metres), and we did a 3 mile loop, so it's not exactly the easiest or shortest on.

The rocks of the summit area have various names: the southeast pinnacles as seen from Grasmere are "The Lion and Lamb". At the other end of the ridge is "The Howitzer" or "The Old Lady Playing the Organ" and is regarded as the true summit. The summit provides a good view down to Grasmere, with Windermere glistening in the distance. Several small groups were gathered, making me wonder how we had passed so few people on the way up, as if they had all just teleported to the top. The Lion and The Lamb on the summit of Helm Crag. Carrying on along the ridge, the obvious path descends toward Grasmere. Taking the path at the gap in the wall, down past the houses, across the road to another path which takes you to Easedale and the original path at the start of the walk. From here it is an easy walk back to Grasmere.
